MILWAUKEE -- Jordan Zimmermann put on a pretty good show for his family and friends in the stands. The Auburndale, Wis., native earned his career-high 13th win and Bryce Harper hit a home run and the Washington Nationals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 on Friday. "You always want do to well in your home state and in front of your family and friends," he said. "I was happy to put up some zeroes, get the month of July over with and into a new month." Zimmermann (13-6) was 12-8 in 2012 after 32 starts. Fridays victory came in his 22nd start. He went six innings, struck out four, but walked a season-high four. "Every inning, there was a double or a walk and a guy would steal a base," Zimmermann said. "There he sat on second with no outs, but I was able to get a few ground balls and some easy outs when I needed them." He worked out of jams in the first and third innings, each time stranding Rickie Weeks at third. The Brewers finished 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position. "It wasnt that much pressure," Zimmermann said. "I just needed a good start after the last three or four I had that were just brutal. It was nice to go out there, go six and put up zeroes. We got the win. That was the main thing." Washington scored a run in the fifth off Alfredo Figaro (1-3). Harper made it 2-0 in the sixth with his 16th homer of the season. "Thats just Harp," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "I expect stuff like that out of Harp. He had a good game." Anthony Rendon singled home a run in the seventh. With runners at the corners, Harper added a run when he reached on an error by second baseman Weeks that allowed Denard Span to score in the ninth. Jonathan Lucroy spoiled the shutout when he hit the first pitch from Tyler Clippard in the eighth for a solo home run. Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 27th save. Ian Desmond doubled over centre fielder Carlos Gomezs head in the fifth. With Span batting, Desmond stole third and then scored when third baseman Jeff Bianchi failed to field the throw from Lucroy. "We made some mistakes again today," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Desmonds steal hurt us. You get behind, you get behind on these guys and if go into the ninth inning and you have to score three runs to tie it, it makes it tough. Really we gave them a couple of runs. We need to play better." Jayson Werth went 3 for 4 with two singles and a double for Washington. Figaro was in the game because starter Tom Gorzelanny left in the second inning after being hit on the left wrist by a line drive. Werth led off the second with a sharp liner right back at the left-hander as he completed his follow-through. At first it appeared the ball struck Gorzelanny on the wrist and then rolled toward the third-base line. He raced after the ball holding his left arm, but made no effort to pick it up. Gorzelanny was examined by the teams training staff and was removed from the game. He was replaced by Figaro. The club said that Gorzelanny has a left elbow contusion. X-rays were negative. "Its a contusion of the left elbow," Roenicke said. "Its day to day. Well see how he is tomorrow. Hopefully, and for us, obviously, he can make his next start, but Im not sure." Its been a tough week for Brewers starters. Yovani Gallardo left Tuesdays game against the Chicago Cubs in the fifth inning with a strained left hamstring. He went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. NOTES: Spin Williams, the Nationals minor-league pitching co-ordinator, took the place of pitching coach Steve McCatty, who did not make the trip. McCatty became ill on Sunday just before the game with the New York Mets. Williams said the two are in constant communication about the pitching staff. After slipping from the summit during the week, the Gunners overcame struggling Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlains second-half brace.KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- There is no longer a football team at San Francisco State, the Gators long ago having given up on the pricy sport in favor of investing in their other athletic programs.Andy Reid and Dirk Koetter will have to settle for Arrowhead Stadium for a reunion. The Chiefs coach and his Tampa Bay counterpart were both on Vic Rowens staff in 1985, trying to learn the ropes after their own playing days. They would reunite a couple years later at Texas-El Paso, and remained joined at the hip at Missouri, before their paths finally began to diverge.Reid headed for the NFL. Koetter stuck around the college game before making the leap.Hes one of the finest football coaches Ive ever been around. His dad might be the best, Reid said. We were little scrub buckets when we started off together, and we ended here, in Missouri, at the University of Missouri. I definitely saw him as a college coach and then, I figured if he got in the NFL, he would be the head coach there, too. Hes very, very good.Hell have to be at his best to figure out a way to outsmart Reid on Sunday. The Chiefs (7-2) have ripped off five straight wins to climb into a tie atop the AFC West, not to mention join the pursuit of the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Their defense has been downright dominant, their offense has done enough to get by, and the wins keep piling up.Andy is one of the best, if not the best coach, Ive ever been around, said Koetter, who seemed unsurprised by Reids success. His attention to detail, his ability to teach, the way he motivates guys -- it was a great blessing for me to be able to work with him like I did.Reids path after leaving Missouri took him to a successful run as an assistant in Green Bay, then his own 14-year run leading Philadelphia. But he seemed to be beaten down those last few years with the Eagles, and it took a move to Kansas City for him to feel rejuvenated.Koetter has had his share of bumps, too. He was a rising star after turning Boise State into a powerhouse, but fell into years of mediocrity leading Arizona State. Stints as offensive coordinator in Jacksonville, Atlanta and Tampa Bay earned him the Buccaneers top job.So far, Koetter also appears to be rejuvenated, too.He has Tampa Bay off to an encouraging 4-5 record after a dominant win over the Bears , and the franchise is now eyeing its first winning season since 2010.Im sure they think they can win the rest of theirr games, Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley said.ddddddddddddBut they cant do that without beating Kansas City. Here are some of the keys to the game:UNHEALTHY CHIEFS: Defensive tackle Jaye Howard has been dealing with a hip flexor, cornerback Marcus Peters with a hip pointer, linebacker Derrick Johnson with hamstring spasms, defensive tackle Dontari Poe with a sore knee, and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin with a groin strain. Its unclear whether any will be inactive Sunday.SPEAKING OF HEALTH: Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston could make his season debut against the Buccaneers. The four-time Pro Bowl selection had surgery to repair his left ACL in February, and was added to the roster last week, though he remained inactive for their game at Carolina. He was feeling pretty good last week, Reid said. Well just have to see.ON THE OTHER SIDE, TOO: Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin expects to carry more of the load this weekend. He returned from a hamstring injury that cost him nearly two months to run for 33 yards against the Bears, giving the Buccaneers a big emotional lift.Getting his confidence back, I think thats the No. 1 thing, Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. I think hell be able to build on that this week.SCRAMBLE, SCRAMBLE: Tampa Bays Jameis Winston and the Chiefs Alex Smith are both threats with their legs, though the Buccaneers do more with designed plays to get their quarterback into space.Hes good outside the pocket, Koetter said. He just has a real feel for that and is a guy that hes a got a rare quality where he will run with it, but hes always got his eyes down the field. A lot of times you find guys that dont want to run it and you find guys that dont want to throw it. Hes one of those guys that has a rare quality, he can do both.EYES ON PETERS: Quarterbacks have avoided Peters after he piled up five interceptions in the first five games. He hasnt had a pick in the past four, but a strip of Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin last week set up Kansas Citys winning field goal.Hes one of the best corners in the league. He has great eyes, Winston said. Hes able to cover his man and keep his eyes in the backfield. Hes one of the best Ive seen do it.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
