PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- David Hearn huddled with Mike Weir at the Canadian Open about learning from near-misses. Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, is now 43 and settling in as a mentor to his younger countrymen. Hearn may be just coming into his own as a pro golfer at age 34. Less than a month after losing in a playoff at the John Deere Classic for his best finish on the PGA Tour, Hearn shot a 4-under 66 on Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship. That was the second-best score of the morning session, a shot behind Jim Furyk. The last time the PGA was played at Oak Hill 10 years ago, Weir was coming off his Masters title and was in contention heading into Sunday. The course is about 2 1/2 hours east of Hearns hometown of Brantford, Ontario -- best known as the hometown of Wayne Gretzky, who has also imparted athletic advice to Hearn. Hearn lost in a three-man playoff July 14 to 19-year-old Jordan Spieth, the youngest winner on the PGA Tour in more than eight decades. Hearn was not that sort of prodigy. He played on the Web.com Tour from 2006-10. Hearn describes himself as a patient golfer, a trait that has served him well in the bigger picture. "My career has always had a certain progression, and Ive always found a way to get competitive at the next level that Ive been to," he said. "For me right now, its just a matter of trying to continue that on, and as Ive been on the PGA Tour for a few years now, Ive gotten better at playing well in the bigger events." Hearn bogeyed the first and last holes Thursday but otherwise successfully attacked the course with his driver, taking advantage of softer greens in the morning after overnight rain. Hearn shot 69 in the final round of the John Deere to reach the playoff with Spieth and defending champion Zach Johnson. He missed a makeable putt on the fourth playoff hole that wouldve won it. Spieth went on to clinch victory on the fifth playoff hole. "Proud of the way I played," Hearn said. "Disappointed that it didnt quite go my way at the finish, but overall, played a really solid tournament. So it feels good for me to be in contention, and I feel like Ive been playing some really good golf the last few months." At the Canadian Open two weeks ago, Hearn shot 73 on Sunday to tie for 44th. But that earned him just enough money to move up one spot on the PGA Championship points list to first alternate, all but assuring him of a spot at Oak Hill. Hearn also got in a good chat with Weir. "Mike is at a point in his career now where hes definitely wanting to give back more, and hes definitely doing a good job of that," Hearn said. "Hes definitely trying to take on that mentorship role a little bit more with some of the players."Air Max 1/97 Sean Wotherspoon Kaufen . -- Tony Stewart is 20 pounds lighter and has a titanium rod in his surgically repaired right leg. Its special teams had problematic moments, too, including a missed field-goal attempt and a botched kickoff return that resulted in a drive starting at Green Bays own 2.Add it all up, and Green Bay flailed its way to a fourth consecutive loss, this one by a 42-24 score against the Washington Redskins on Sunday night. We see ourselves as a much better football team than this. Its just not panning out, Packers safety Micah Hyde said. We have way too much talent in this locker room to be performing like that. But week in, week out, were doing it. Im speechless. In each game of Green Bays current losing skid, the team has allowed at least 30 points.Coming in here, we knew we needed this game, coach Mike McCarthy said. Our backs up against it.His Packers beat the Redskins in the playoffs last season and are perennially seen as a title contender, but are now 4-6 and in third place in the NFC North, two games behind both the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.Theyre probably not playing like we normally see the Packers play, said Robert Kelley, the rookie running back who carried 24 times for 137 yards and scores from 1, 4 and 10 yards out.The Packers secondary never seemed to be in the right place at the right time Sunday, allowing Washingtons Kirk Cousins to go 21 of 30 for 375 yards, three TDs and zero interceptions. We didnt stop `em. Our pass defense, we didnt get off the field. It was touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal in thee second half, McCarthy said.dddddddddddd. That tells the story. The Packers actually led 10-7 late in the second quarter and, after falling behind 29-17 early in the fourth quarter on Cousins 70-yard TD to Pierre Garcon, pulled to 29-24 on Rodgers 6-yard connection with Cook. Anyones game at that point, right? Nope. The Redskins converted a risky fourth-and-1 at their own 41 on a sneak by Cousins and were on their way.Green Bays next drive ended with Cooks turnover. We put ourselves in a tough spot, said Rodgers, who was 26 of 41 for 351 yards, three TDs and zero interceptions. So weve got find a way to get a win next week and approach it one week at a time. Thats all weve got right now.He was hardly at his best on a wind-whipped evening, putting throws at receivers feet or over their heads, even from short range. But the porous defense is Green Bays biggest issue at the moment -- as it has been while dropping five of their past six games. You cant win ballgames giving up that many points, Hyde said, no matter whos on offense. Now comes another prime-time game next week, this time on a Monday at the Philadelphia Eagles.McCarthy was asked whether he has the right players to succeed on defense. This is not the time for personnel evaluations, coaching evaluations and those type of things, he replied. Were in a rough stretch right now.INJURIESCB Demetri Goodson (knee), OL Don Barclay (shoulder), LB Blake Martinez (knee) and S Kentrell Brice (back) were all hurt during the game.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich ' ' '
