ATLANTA -- Coach Julio Dely Valdes was upset when Panamas sudden lapse in concentration led to an early goal for Cuba. Panama didnt need long, though, to regain its aggressive identity and make Valdes smile. "It came in a moment when Panama was dominating the game, and we were looking to attack," Valdes said. "Its very difficult when you get scored upon because it gets very complicated. We had to continue to pursue the attack." Gabriel Torres scored two goals in the first half to help Panama beat 10-man Cuba 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup on Saturday. Panama, which has three wins and no losses in four Gold Cup games this year, advanced to the semifinals next week in Dallas. Torres, whose penalty kick in the 25th minute made it 1-1, gave Panama a 2-1 lead 13 minutes later. Blas Perez assisted on the goal by heading Gabriel Gomezs crossing pass to Torres, who kept the ball from touching the ground and used his right foot to beat goalkeeper Odelin Molina on the right side from 8 yards. Torres has five goals in four Gold Cup games. He scored twice in Panamas 2-1 group stage win over Mexico. Cuba played a man down and gave up four goals in the last 32 minutes after Ariel Martinez was given a red card for a hard foul against Perez. "I dont think it merited a red card," Cuba coach Walter Benitez said. "It was unexpected." With Martinez gone from the game, Cuba gave up a flurry of goals. Carlos Rodriguez put Panama ahead 3-1 in the 68th minute from 12 yards. Perez added a breakaway goal in the 77th minute to make it 4-1, Jairo Jimenez scored in the 85th minute and Perez again in the 86th. Losing Martinez was a big blow to Cuba considering that he scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Belize earlier this week. The Cubans, who have lost 13 of their past 15 Gold Cup games, led 1-0 in the 21st minute when Jose Ciprians right-footed kick from the centre of the box beat goalie Jamie Pendo to the right side. Panama has allowed one goal or none in eight straight Gold Cup games. The Panamanians lost to the U.S. in the semifinals two years ago. Valdes liked how Perez, who missed the win over Mexico to fulfil his Major League Soccer obligation to FC Dallas, was active throughout the afternoon with two goals and an assist. It marked Perezs first goals in three tournament games. "As a forward, he always wants to be accompanied with goals," Valdes said. "We saw today the Blas of always, working very well on the field." Though Panamas past four goals came against an outmanned opponent, Valdes was pleased that his team kept attacking to put Cuba away. "Its not easy to score six goals, including that we couldve scored another one, but there are things early that we must improve," Valdes said. "Early in the game, there was too much overconfidence, and we have to be serious when the other team is trying to demonstrate that they are superior." Notes: Panama improved to 10-4-4 in all competitions. ... This tournament marks Panamas second straight Goal Cup with no losses in the group stage and quarterfinals. ... And that includes SMU on Saturday night. We are learning to be the overdog instead of the underdog, Herman said. It is interesting, you are drawing on different senses to motivate yourself. Its all pride when you are the underdog that is disrespected. There is the pride of the, `Hey, Im going to prove all of you wrong. Now its the pride of, `Hey, we have to prove everybody right. The realistic playoff chances for Houston (6-1, 3-1 American) ended with the loss to Navy. If quarterback Greg Ward Jr. and the Cougars want to rekindle those hopes, theyll need some convincing victories leading into a late-season nonconference showdown with Louisville. And SMU (2-4, 0-2) is another three-touchdown underdog. There is a little rivalry being that we are the only two teams in our conference in the state of Texas, Herman said. Theyre going to give us their best shot, and their best shot is good enough to beat us if were not hitting all our cylinders.Things to consider in the resumption of a series that Houston leads 15-3-1 since the Mustangs returned from the so-called death penalty in 1989 and lost to the Cougars 95-21:FORGET ABOUT IT: Herman says he had zero interest in news this week that the Big 12 rejected Houston and 10 other schools for possible expansion. The anti-Big 12 reaction in the state was swiift, including a rebuke from Gov.ddddddddddddGreg Abbott . Im dead serious when I tell you it consumes zero amount of my time, energy, effort or thought at all, said Herman, whose name will be prominent in high-profile coaching searches this offseason.WORKING WARD: The senior standout has more than twice as many rushing attempts as any of the Houston running backs, leading to questions of whether he is being overused. He has 105 carries for 414 yards with six touchdowns. Ward is ninth nationally at 323 yards passing per game. He has 224 attempts and a 70 percent completion rate with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Ive had the conversation with the offensive staff about can we win with less read plays maybe, Herman said. But if we need to win the game, well use him.SPEAKING OF OVERWORKED: The Cougars still havent had a bye, and wont until after hosting Central Florida next week. The Louisville showdown comes a Thursday after playing Tulane the preceding Saturday. And SMU is coming off a bye. Were playing football for 12 1/2 weeks straight, so its going to take its toll on their bodies, Herman said.THE FADE ROUTE: SMU stayed close for a half as a double-digit underdog against high-scoring Texas rivals Baylor and TCU. The Mustangs were even with the Bears on the road at 6-6, and trailed the Horned Frogs 6-3 at home. But Baylor, now ranked ninth, outscored SMU 34-7 after halftime for a 40-13 win. TCU pulled away for a 33-3 win after a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second half.---College Football: http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
