MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez bounced back from his worst outing of the season with a dominant effort against the Mets. He pitched seven scoreless innings and had two hits with an RBI to help the Miami Marlins past the Mets 8-1 on Saturday. Fernandez (3-3) allowed just three hits and struck out eight to give the Marlins their fourth winning streak of the season. Miami has won two straight games three times and three in a row once. Fernandez retired his final 11 hitters and struck out the side in the seventh. He also had an RBI single in in the second, and doubled and scored in the seventh. He did this all in front of his mom, who he flew in from their adopted hometown of Tampa on Saturday morning. She saw him win as a major leaguer for the first time. "I woke up early, I went and picked her up and then we had lunch together," he said. "She was here watching the game. Anytime I get to see my family that makes me very happy." With the Marlins trying to keep his pitch count low, the rookie said he was not thinking shutout despite being at 87 pitches through seven innings. "Nope. I was thinking one pitch at a time," he said. "I wasnt thinking about anything else. I was thinking about making pitches and keeping the ball low." Fernandez was coming off his shortest outing of the season. He surrendered seven runs -- four earned -- in 3 1-3 innings at Tampa Bay on May 27. "I was a little upset like I should be after that game, but the next day was another day," Fernandez said. "It was time to get work done and Im pretty happy how I came back." Marlins manager Mike Redmond said he was confident Fernandez would pitch well Saturday. "Hes been able to bounce back after a tough start and be great and he was again today," Redmond said. It was Fernandezs third start against the Mets, his first with a decision. "Im going to tell you something, if he throws like he did today, I dont care if you see him 30 times, hes going to get you out," Mets manager Terry Collins said. Chris Coghlan had three hits, including two run-scoring singles. Derek Dietrich had a two-run single in a four-run seventh that made it 8-0. Collin McHugh (0-1) gave up four runs and six hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out one in his first start of the season. Omar Quintanilla had two of the Mets hits. Pinch hitter Justin Turner delivered a run-scoring double off Dan Jennings in the eighth. Coghlans two-out single in the first scored Placido Polanco from second to give Miami a 1-0 lead. Polanco crossed the plate before Dietrich was thrown out at third by centre fielder Rick Ankiel. "If Polanco lets up there, we dont get that run. That set the tone," Redmond said. Miami went ahead 2-0 in the second when Fernandez singled to score Jeff Mathis from first base. Mathis walked with two outs, and scored when Fernandez lined a single into deep left-centre. The Marlins scored twice in the fourth to go ahead 4-0. Coghlan and Greg Dobbs opened with singles. Adeiny Hechavarria delivered a sacrifice fly and Mathis tripled in Dobbs. Miami had lost nine in a row and 16 of 18 before winning Friday night. NOTES: It was Fernandezs third start against the Mets and his first with a decision. ... Graeme [Cremer] just said: Do what you know best, Chisoro said. Ive done it before, Ive opened the bowling in a couple of T20 games and Ive been successful, so it was just me doing my normal thing. At the other end was Sikandar Raza, who had shared an unbeaten 91-run stand with Chisoro, bowling offspin with the new ball. As soon as we came off, the first thing I asked is How long is the lunch break?, explained Raza. They said its only 15 minutes. The next thing you know, the captain and coach got together and they told us This is the plan: TCs going to bowl the first one, and youre going to bowl the second one. And because its still gripping, and it wasnt drizzling at that moment, well see if it turns. And credit to TC, he started so well. Those two wickets in the early overs certainly put us on the front foot. When we started it wasnt that wet, so we could grip the ball and it was turning really nicely, Chisoro confirmed. And some of them werent turning, they were just going on with the angle, so it was pretty difficult to bat at that moment. And then they lost two quick wickets, so the momentum was on our side.Raza and Chisoro, and Donald Tiripano before him, had started to shift the momentum Zimbabwes way with the bat earlier. From the pit of 89 for 7, Raza and Tiiripano rescued Zimbabwe with a 38-run stand for the eighth wicket.dddddddddddd Raza and Chisoro then took the team past 200 - and past their own expectations of what would be a winning total in sticky, muggy conditions. We had to revise our total that we thought would be a winning total, once we saw that it was gripping and turning, Raza said. We sent a message back [while we were in the middle] that were looking at 180 to be a winning total. Once we passed that total, we got together again and we thought this is not the time to go ultra aggressive just because weve achieved that total. Well take our chances, but well take them in the 48th and 49th overs. When TC came long, I know hes an aggressive batter so I kind of have to slap him at times and tell him This is what were going to do and this is how were going to play, Raza joked, but credit to him. We all know TC can bat. Hes done it at franchise level, and hes done it for Zim A as well. For an aggressive batter with not a lot of international experience, I think credit goes to TC for how he batted out there. He deserves all the credit. The victory secured Zimbabwes place in Sundays final against Sri Lanka, and both men insisted that morale in the dressing room would be given a timely boost by their performance. Coming out of a performance like today, Id say its pretty high, Raza said.I think our confidence is very high, Chisoro agreed. Were very used to these conditions now, and we should use that to our advantage, and win the final. ' ' '
