NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason thought it was fun watching Mississippi freshman Shea Patterson in his college debut last week. Defending against the quarterback who just led a big fourth-quarter rally to upset then-No. 8 Texas A&M brings out an entirely different emotion.Weve got our work cut out for us, Mason said. The Commodores (4-6, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) are hosting Ole Miss (5-5, 2-4) on Saturday night with time and games running out to become bowl eligible. The Rebels suddenly have new life with Patterson showing just how effective he could be taking over once they lost senior Chad Kelly to a knee injury, posting a 29-28 comeback win on the SEC road.Mason said the Ole Miss offense remains similar, but the 6-foot-2 Patterson reminds the Vandy coach of another quarterback he had to defend against while at Stanford in Marcus Mariota with the freshman able to run and extend plays while also looking downfield to make a bigger play. That makes containing Patterson, who ran 15 times for 64 yards at Texas A&M, crucial. This quarterback is capable of having a big game, Mason said.Patterson will be making his second straight start on the SEC road, though visiting the smallest stadium in the league will be a much easier trip than going to Kyle Field. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze isnt worried after what he saw in Pattersons debut. Patterson threw for 338 yards and drove the Rebels to four scores in the big comeback after 21-6.As the game went on, I thought he got more and more comfortable, and the fourth quarter he had for a true freshman in that environment was pretty special, Freeze said.Vanderbilt now has lost two straight and needs its first win over Ole Miss since 2012 to play its way into bowl eligibility. The Commodores are coming off a 26-17 loss at Missouri .---Some other things to know about the Rebels visit to Vanderbilt:OLE MISS STARTS FAST: Ole Miss has just a 5-5 record despite having a lead at halftime in nine out of 10 games. The only time the Rebels trailed was last week against Texas A&M. Said Freeze: Maybe we need to try that more often.COMMODORES NO CUPCAKE: Ole Miss has won three straight games against Vanderbilt including a 27-16 victory in Oxford last season . But this has been a very close series over the past decade. The Commodores have won six out of the past 11 meetings dating back to 2005.RALPH WEBBS HEALTH: The Commodores have been using a running back by committee approach with junior Ralph Webb recovering from an injured ankle. Webb had been leading the SEC in rushing earlier this season and still ranks fifth in the league. But Webb ran for only 46 yards in a loss at Auburn and had just 34 last week at Missouri. He currently has 935 yards rushing and needs 150 yards to become Vandys all-time leading rusher.BOWL HOPES: Ole Miss needs one more win to be bowl eligible for a fifth-straight season. The last time the Rebels made five straight bowls was from 1957 to 1971, when the program made the postseason 15 consecutive times. Freeze said making a bowl matters as a reward for the seniors and with so many underclassmen needing the extra practice.SHURMUR IMPROVING: Vandy quarterback Kyle Shurmur is coming off his best back-to-back games, throwing for 473 yards to rank second in the SEC in November. He threw for 252 yards last week at Missouri, completing passes to nine different receivers. But he also was intercepted twice.---AP Sports Writer David Brandt contributed to this report---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.orgMaxi Rodriguez Argentina Jersey . - Blake Griffin had 30 points and 12 rebounds, J. LOUIS -- Heading into the final stretch of the season, the issues for the Chicago Bears banged-up defence only seem to be getting worse. DENVER -- The Tampa Bay Rays waited 41 days to end their road futility, so a couple extra hours didnt bother them. When they finally got going, it didnt take long to seize control.Blake Snell waited out severe weather to hold Colorado to one hit over six strong innings, Evan Longoria homered and drove in three runs and Tampa Bay beat the Rockies 10-1 on Tuesday night to end an 11-game road losing streak.Snell (2-4) struck out nine and Matt Andriese pitched the final three innings for his first save. Steve Pearce also homered in his return from the disabled list for the Rays, who ended the third longest road losing streak in club history. It feels good, Snell said. I definitely think were turning it around, pieces are coming back. I feel like were going to get it going.Tampa Bay had dropped 25 of 29 games since June 15 to fall to 23 games under .500.Heavy rain and lightning delayed the start of the game by 2 hours, 1 minute. The late start didnt bother the Rays, who ended the longest road losing streak in the majors this season. Their last road win was June 8 at Arizona. They broke out against Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood (8-6). Longorias RBI single in the first got Tampa Bay on the board, and after consecutive doubles in the third, he launched a mammoth home run onto the concourse in left field that bounced out of Coors Field. The homer, his 22nd, went an estimated 462 feet and gave the Rays a 5-0 lead. It is the longest home run by a Rays player since J.P. Arencibias 464-foot blast at Detroit on Sept. 7, 2015.Thats a bomb in any park, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said of Longorias shot. That ball went a long way. They tacked on another run on Kevin Kiermaiers RBI double later in the third and Pearces two-run homer capped a three-run ninth off reliever Gonzalez Germen.Snell didnt allow a run for the first time in his seven starts. The only hit he allowed was a leadoff single by Charlie Blackmon in the fourth, and he stranded him at third by fanning Nolan Arenado and getting Ryan Raburn to fly out.ddddddddddddWeve been extremely positive with everything Blake has done since hes been here, Cash said. This justifies it, this type of outing. Its a little unfair to expect a ton out of a guy making his debut. Today he put it together and we saw the elite pitcher weve heard about for quite some time.Snell said he didnt use his curveball much because he didnt have a good feel for it, so he went to his slider and elevated his fastball to keep Colorados hitters off balance.I feel its a hard pitch to hit, especially when theyre looking down for sliders, Snell said. Fastball up in the zone is hard to get to.Only four Rockies hitters reached base against Snell. Trevor Story spoiled the bid for a shutout with his 23rd homer in the ninth.TRAINERS ROOMRays: Pearce (strained right hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and OF Nick Franklin was optioned to Triple-A Durham. ... RHP Brad Boxberger (oblique) will make another rehab appearance Thursday.Rockies: LHP Chris Rusin (left shoulder strain) allowed one run on four hits in four innings in his second rehab start for Triple-A Albuquerque.HOME COOKEDChatwood has been masterful on the road but has struggled at home this season. The righty is 3-6 with a 6.14 ERA at Coors Field after allowing seven runs in four-plus innings Tuesday night. Conversely, he is 5-0 with a 1.30 ERA on the road.At some point, you got to make an adjustment and I didnt make that adjustment tonight, Chatwood said.UP NEXTTampa Bay righty Chris Archer(4-13) has lost his last six decisions and is one shy of matching his career-high losing streak. Colorado left-hander Jorge De La Rosa (6-6) is 4-2 with a 2.68 in six starts since returning to the rotation on June 14. ' ' '
