Rose played at Hazeltine at the 2009 PGA Championship and said the course can be as tough as you want it to be.The pin on 17 is an absolute joke, Rose said. Its a 9-iron into the middle of the green and you stiff it. For him, none of that compares to winning the Ryder Cup on Sunday. And Watson didnt even play. This is the greatest thing Ive done in golf, the vice captain said after the U.S. beat Europe 17-11. Im so happy for this team. This team was amazing. They took me in their arms and let me be a part of it.Watsons graciousness came after he was surprisingly left off of the playing roster by captain Davis Love III. But Loves decision was validated when captains picks Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes, Ryan Moore and Matt Kuchar combined to go 7-6-0 at Hazeltine. The seven wins were the most by a set of captains picks in Ryder Cup history. After the initial disappointment, Watson accepted Loves invitation to be a vice captain.A guy like him, showing up here, putting his ego to the side and saying, `I want to be a part of this, Brandt Snedeker said. They had a lot of pressure on them for the last two years, Love said. Every time we picked a guy, they had more and more pressure, more and more questions. The win gave the U.S. side its first point and moved the Americans within four of the match.Reed and McIlroy threw birdies -- including the final hole -- and chip-ins at each other, stoking the crowd and in one instance, forcing McIlroy to back off a shot. The Europeans started the day trailing by three points, with the United States needing only five to clinch its first cup since 2008.So far, the U.S. leads in two of the first six pairings, but it is up in four of the final six. He rolled a 20-footer in to match McIlroys birdie on No. 8 and waved his finger right in McIlroys face.Earlier, after McIlroy rolled in a birdie putt on No. 6, Reed responded with one of his own, taking a bow as the ball dropped into the hole.It was a sarcastic bite at McIlroy, who bowed after a match-winning eagle putt on Friday evening.---NoonAmerican captain Davis Love III says he and his vice captains will be vigilant in identifying unruly fans in the galleries at the Ryder Cup.Love says they will be watching and listening for heckling that goes out of bounds and will not hesitate to help security officials throw fans out.Love says 97 percent of the fans at Hazeltine have been great, but its the 3 percent were hearing out there. In a potentially controversial decision, the ISSF Athletes Committee has recommended mixed-gender team events for the Olympic Games. The committee, headed by Abhinav Bindra, has sought to replace the double-trap mens event with a mixed-gender trap event, convert the 50m prone mens event into a mixed-gender air rifle event and the 50m pistol mens event into a mixed-gender air pistol event. The move has been welcomed by female shooters in India, though there is some disquiet over the 50m pistol event -- one in which Indians are gaining strength -- being scrapped. The decision follows the International Olympic Committees (IOC) objective of international sport federations working towards a 50% female representation at the Games. Currently, shooting has nine mens and six womens events at the Olympics. In his statement announcing the recommendations, Bindra said that they were buoyed by the success of the 10m air mixed team events at the Youth Olympics. The guiding principle was to look at [the] situation in a holistic manner which would be beneficial in [the] long term for the shooting sport in order for us to maintain our presence in the Olympic movement, he said.In November 2015, the committee had recommended to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) that the 50m rifle prone men, 50m pistol men and double-trap mens events be converted into mixed-gender events. Before arriving at a final decision, the Athletes Committee reviewed its stance taking into account factors such as current participation, youth participation and accessibility. This decision was then released by the ISSF Ad Hoc Committee. It is subject to a formal ratification at the ISSF governing council and executive committee meeting, to be held in New Delhi in February 2017.Nattional Rifle Association of India (NRAI) chief Raninder Singh told ESPN that the idea is to test out the mixed-gender team events at the World Cup to be held in Delhi two days after the ISSF meeting.ddddddddddddSince the format and rules of the mixed-gender event are still not clear, we will have to wait it out, he said. If things work according to plan, we can hopefully test the events out at the World Cup.While mixed-gender events in contact sports such as wrestling, boxing or football are understandably ruled out, gender segregation in a skill-based sport like shooting, which has little to do with physical strength or stamina, is harder to justify. Both sexes competed together at international competitions for decades in the past. At the 1976 Montreal Games, USs Margaret Murdock, a 33-year-old nurse, tied for gold in the small-bore rifle event against male teammate Lanny Bassham. Though Bassham was awarded gold for having scored three 100s to Murdocks two, at the medal ceremony he pulled his female teammate up to the first-place platform. Murdock was also the first woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. The rifle events were split into mens and womens events in 1984.Female shooters in India called it a long overdue measure. Though theres still ambiguity over the rules of the new event, Im both excited and intrigued to see how it pans out, Indian pistol shooter Heena Sidhu told ESPN. As a female shooter I have always wondered why men have more number of events than we do. Not only at the Olympics, an equality in terms of participation needs to be brought about in continental meets and world championships as well. ' ' '
