There are few sports that owe their origins to the ancient equivalent of a Bond movie -- but modern pentathlon is one of them.It was created by French baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement, and combines all of the aspects of traditional combat. The basic premise is of a soldier trapped in a castle on a lake. He must fence his way out before swimming to the shore, riding an unfamiliar horse out of the village and running through a wood shooting at enemies.Modern pentathlon was first held at the 1912 Olympic Games and an event for women was added in 2000. It consists of fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting and running.---ONE TO WATCH:Cheered on by a home crowd, Brazilian Yane Marques will be bidding to improve on the bronze medal she won four years ago.Modern pentathlon was a little known discipline in Brazil when Marques, who was born in a small town in the Brazilian northeast, took it up in 2003, becoming national champion just a year later. But a series of titles, including gold at the 2007 Pan American Games and becoming the first Olympic medal winner in modern pentathlon in the entire Southern Hemisphere has made the country sit up and take note.Marques also won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games and silver at the 2013 world championships, where she lost out to Olympic gold medalist Laura Asadauskaite. There are advantages: knowing the facilities, having a huge crowd behind me, my family being able to see me race, the 32-year-old Marques said. Aside from all this though, there is a very great pressure. The 32-year-old again faces stiff competition, with the top seven from London all returning.Asadauskaite of Lithuania will be favorite, along with Germanys Lena Schoneborn, the 2008 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion.---RULE CHANGES:The core sport remains largely the same since London 2012, but with the addition of a fencing bonus round, which sees the athletes compete in a one-on-one format on a single piste after the traditional round robin in a bid to up their score. The combined event has also been slightly altered to involve four 800m laps of running, instead of 1000m, each still prefaced by laser shooting at five targets, with the intention of restoring more weight to the shooting element. The introduction of the combined event was one of two dramatic changes between Beijing 2008 and London, with the other being the replacement of air pistols with laser ones, for safety reasons.---FAMILY AFFAIRS:For the first time in modern pentathlon history, two sisters will compete in the same Games. It will be a third successive Olympics for 24-year-old American Margaux Isaksen, who was fourth in London, just two seconds away from a medal, and a first for younger sister Isabella, 22.To be able to compete together with your sister, there is nothing more special, Margaux said. I think this could be the most special Olympics just in that respect. There could also be sibling rivalry on the mens team. Nathan Schrimsher was the first American athlete in any sport to qualify for the Rio Games and younger brother Lucas is his reserve teammate.Sydney siblings Max and Chloe Esposito will also both be competing in the modern pentathlon and the family link doesnt stop there.Right alongside them will be their father and coach, Daniel Esposito, who represented Australia in the sport in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and also qualified for the 1988 Seoul Olympics but had to pull out due to injury.Chloe, 23, finished a surprise seventh in London and is now targeting a first medal in modern pentathlon for Australia. It is 18-year-old Maxs first Olympic Games.---SKULDUGGERYOne of the biggest scandals in Olympic history took place in modern pentathlon during the 1976 Games in Montreal.Soviet athlete Boris Onischenko was one of the stars of the discipline. He had helped his country win the team event in 1972, where he was also an individual silver-medallist, and he won the world championship three times. At the age of 38, Onischenko was expected to bow out of his last Olympics with a medal. However, during the fencing section it was discovered that he had wired his epee so that he could trigger the electronic scoring system with his hand and register a hit at will.Onishchenko was disqualified and escorted from the athletes village by Soviet officials that very night. Two months later it was reported that Onischenko had been called before Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev for a personal scolding, dismissed from the Red Army, fined 5,000 rubles, stripped of all his sporting honors, and was working as a taxi driver in Kiev. Denzel Ward Womens Jersey . Hazard cut in from the left and scored with a swerving right-footed shot for ninth goal of the season, which proved to be enough for the victory despite Chelseas forwards again lacking a cutting edge up front. Clippards deal Monday means all eight Nationals players who filed for arbitration wound up settling before a hearing. The Miami Dolphins turned their season around with a five-game winning streak and are in the mix for an AFC playoff berth. The San Francisco 49ers havent registered a victory since Sept. 12 and are hoping to avoid a new low in franchise futility. Its a tale of two teams heading in different directions as San Francisco attempts to sidestep a franchise-record 10th consecutive defeat when it visits the streaking Dolphins on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, FOX).The 49ers (1-9) were victorious in Chip Kellys debut as coach but the season quickly unraveled. San Francisco gave up a combined 83 points over its next two games and allowed an average of 34.8 points during the nine-game skid. The run of defeats matches the 1978 49ers for the clubs worst stretch of single-season setbacks. But quarterback Colin Kaepernick is putting on the brave face and citing that all is not lost.We still have an opportunity to win games, Kaepernick said. Thats what we have to stay focused on and take it one week at a time. There is that feeling out there that were not going to be in the playoffs, but we still have an opportunity to do some good things and build on for next year.Miami (6-4) feared its own dreadful campaign when it opened the season with four defeats in five games under first-year coach Adam Gase. The Dolphins then tinkered with the offense and began feeding the football to second-year running back Jay Ajayi. They havent lost since and stand one game behind the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs for the final AFC wild-card spots.Ajayi rushed for 685 yards during the winning streak -- including topping 200 yards in consecutive games -- and suddenly ranks tied for sixth in the NFL with 802 yards. The emerging star nicknamed the J-Train could be in for another big game Sunday as San Francisco ranks last in the NFL in rushing defense at 179.5 yards per game.Perhaps the bigger element in terms of slowing down Ajayi might be the health of his own offensive line.Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey (hip) will miss the game and Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert (wrist) is doubtful. Standout rookie guard Laremy Tunsil (shoulder) missed the second half of last Sundays 14-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams and is listed as quuestionable.ddddddddddddMeanwhile, quarterback Ryan Tannehill has adapted to Gases run-based approach and has thrown for six touchdowns against one interception during the winning streak. His offense is really fun to play in, does a lot of things to help a quarterback, Tannehill said on a conference call. Just his knowledge -- being around all the quarterbacks he has -- hes learned so much and can help you in so many ways.Interestingly, Gase was close to a deal to become the 49ers coach following the 2014 season but San Francisco decided to hire Jim Tomsula.Tomsula went 5-11 in one season before being fired while Gase became the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. He cites the interview experience with the 49ers as a big help toward landing the Miami gig this past winter. It made it so much easier for myself when I went through that next round the year afterwards to know what to expect and understand the process of that second interview, Gase said on a conference call.Instead, it is Kelly dealing with San Franciscos situation and another hit occurred this week when free safety Eric Reid underwent season-ending surgery for a torn bicep suffered in Sundays 30-17 loss to the New England Patriots.Reid (81 tackles) will be replaced by second-year pro Jaquiski Tartt on the unit that ranks last in the NFL in both scoring defense (31.3) and total defense (431.3 yards per game). The 49ers also rank near the bottom of the league in total offense (30th at 309.6) while averaging 20.4 points per game. Kelly committed toward Kaepernick as the starting quarterback for the rest of this season and promises that his squad hasnt quit. They practice well, they want to win, theyre engaged, Kelly said. Theyre not excited about where we are now in terms of what weve done win-loss wise. Weve got to go back to work. Thats the only thing you can do in this situation.Miami defensive end Cameron Wake, who has a team-leading 7 1/2 sacks, had a big outing in 2012 when the Dolphins and 49ers last met. Wake recorded three sacks and a forced fumble but San Francisco prevailed 27-13. ' ' '
