DAVIE, Fla. -- The outlook is cloudy for the Miami Dolphins offense, so its no surprise rain began to fall during practice Monday, making it difficult to hold onto the ball, much less advance it up the field. How did the Dolphins do?We didnt look good enough, offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said. I was disappointed. Were going to play in some rain games, and that was great work for us. But we fumbled a couple of snaps, and thats unacceptable.Alas, the offense hasnt looked good in dry weather, either. Christensens unit was manhandled in an early training camp scrimmage, and in a brief test in the exhibition opener Friday at the Giants, the first-team offense netted 8 yards in seven snaps.Theres been no sign of improvement from last year, when Miami ranked 28th in points and went 6-10. Progress needs to come soon, Christensen said.Weve got to protect our quarterback better, weve got to run it better, weve got to throw and catch it better, weve got to do everything better, he said. These next two weeks, if we dont see some big improvements, then we better get a little bit nervous. The Dolphins play Friday at Dallas and on Aug. 25 against Atlanta in Orlando. It would be fair to predict the starters will see more action in those games, except Christensen and head coach Adam Gase arent sure who some of the starters are. Both guard jobs remain open, and theres a competition between Jay Ajayi and Arian Foster at running back. Its difficult to evaluate personnel, Christensen said, because the offense is not yet operating at full speed while learning a new playbook from a new coaching staff.Theres too much thinking, he said. Weve given them a lot to think about it, and it slows folks down. We look like a team thats thinking and making sure were trying to do the right thing. As a result, familiar problems persist, with blocking the most worrisome issue. The line has struggled to protect Ryan Tannehill in practice, and the Giants pressured him plenty. Some observers wonder why first-round draft pick Laremy Tunsil keeps lining up with the second team at guard, while holdovers Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner work with the first unit despite their shaky play in the past. But first-year coach Gase said he wants his staff to thoroughly assess every player on the roster.I know everybody is really itching to fire everybody and bench everybody, Gase said. But everybody has a fresh start with this crew. Our job is to evaluate what we see. Anything that happened in the past is irrelevant. It doesnt matter to me. Every guy is going to get a true evaluation, and well make our final decision before the first game of the season. This is going to be the process that we go through.Christensen said the line will be fine by the time the season begins Sept. 11. The group includes four former first-round picks -- Tunsil, tackles Branden Albert and JaWuan James, and center Mike Pouncey.I think were going to end up with not only a good offensive line, but a deep one, Christensen said. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Justin Rose delivered a gold-medal performance in golf that was worth a 112-year wait.In a final round that was tense from the opening hole, Rose hit a pitch to 3 feet for birdie on the par-5 18th hole at Olympic Golf Course for a 4-under 67 and a 2-shot victory over Henrik Stenson to win the first gold medal in golf since 1904 in St. Louis. And the 36-year-old from Great Britain showed how much it mattered. As the final putt fell into the cup, Rose thrust his fist into the air and popped the British crest on his shirt before turning to embrace Stenson.Stenson already made it through one big duel this summer at Royal Troon to win the British Open. Along the back nine, the 40-year-old Swedes back began to act up, and Stenson had a physiotherapist work on it on the 14th hole. He kept firing away, however, hitting a tough pitch to 4 feet for birdie on the 16th to tie for the lead. They remained tied playing the 18th, with fans lining both sides of the fairway and crammed into the grandstands. Stensons pitch from 50 yards came up short, just over 20 feet away. Knowing that Rose was tight for birdie, Stenson rammed his birdie putt some 7 feet by the cup and missed the par putt, giving him a 3-under 68.The bogey wasnt enough to take the silver away from Stenson.Matt Kuchar of the United States, starting the final round seven shots out of the lead, provided his own thrills. Kuchar went 6 under during a six-hole stretch that he capped off with a 15-foot eagle on the 10th hole to get him in the mix, and his wedge to 2 feet for birdie on the 17th put him one shot behind. He failed to birdie the 18th, howeveer, and his 63 was good enough for the bronze.ddddddddddddI cant explain the pride to you thats just busting out of my chest, Kuchar said.Australias Marcus Fraser, playing with Rose and Stenson on the final day, failed to go with the two major winners and dropped out of contention with four bogeys on the front nine.He steadied late and birdied the last hole for a one-over 73 to tie for fifth on eight-under, a shot behind Belgian Thomas Pieters. The clubhouse leader after two rounds, Fraser started Sunday three behind Rose at -9 but never challenged. Not in my wildest dreams did I think I had the chance to be here, let alone mixing it with those guys over four rounds at such a big event, he said.It was very pleasing, I just didnt have much in me on the weekend. My game was pretty scrappy and I didnt deserve to have a medal but I felt I fought as hard as I could.Rose is the first gold medalist in golf since George Lyon of Canada won against a field of mostly Americans. Golf organizations lobbied hard to get the sport back into the Olympics, only for some of the biggest stars -- including the top four in the world -- to withdraw in the month leading up to the Rio Games for reasons that ranged from fears over the Zika virus to security. The lasting memory of its debut was Rose and Stenson going at it for more than five hours, neither with more than a 1-stroke advantage the entire round. And there was Rose at the end, pumping his fists as the fans waved the Union Jack around the 18th green. ' ' '
