RIO DE JANEIRO -- Tony Parker is keeping his minutes down as he gets back into game shape.Good thing for France he was ready to play at the end.Parker hit the go-ahead jumper with 31 seconds left, and the French beat Serbia 76-75 on Monday in an Olympic mens basketball game.Sitting on the bench for most of the fourth quarter as Serbia built a lead, Parker came back on late to help Frances run of six straight points to end the game.I was waiting for my moment, Parker said.It didnt appear one would be necessary after the French raced to a 20-4 lead. But Serbia rallied and had a 75-70 advantage before Nando de Colo scored four straight points.Parker, who had finally checked back into the game with about 3 + minutes left, then got the ball toward the corner as the shot clock was winding down and launched a shot that he said felt good as soon as it left his hands.Parker has won four championships with the San Antonio Spurs and was the MVP of the 2007 NBA Finals, but its not often he gets a feeling like Monday. Its awesome, Parker said. Its not every day you hit almost a buzzer-beater, a game-winning shot against a great team. Serbia has an unbelievable team. It was a great win for us.Parker missed some time with his French teammates as his wife delivered their second son, Liam, on July 29. Parker then rejoined the squad for his second Olympics, but early in the tournament hes only playing about 20-25 minutes as he rebuilds is conditioning. So he had a seat on the France bench while Serbias lead grew to as much as seven points in the final period. He came back on as the Serbians were making two free throws that made it 75-70.We didnt want to burn his energy too soon, French coach Vincent Collet said.France, considered a medal contender, has won two in a row after dropping its Olympic opener. Parker became the EuroBasket career scoring leader in last summers tournament, but the French lost to Spain in the semifinals, forcing them to win an Olympic qualifying tournament his summer. There was initial fear Parker, 34, could miss the tournament after his wife became pregnant, but he was available to help the French secure their spot in early July. The French are a close-knit group staying together in the Olympic village, and Parker wanted to be a part of it.I love being in the village, he said. Its part of the Olympic experience being with everybody and sharing experiences with all the other athletes and meeting everyone. Thats what I like the most is meeting all the other athletes and enjoying ourselves. Its been a great experience. And its getting better for a French team that was routed by Australia in its opener. The French looked sharp early in this one during a blistering start in front of top-ranked Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, who watched his home country after he was eliminated in singles earlier in the Olympics. The lead got away from France, and the game almost did, too. A careless turnover after Parkers jumper when de Colo threw an ill-advised alley-oop instead of trying to run out the clock gave Serbia one last chance, and Bogdan Bogdanovics shot from inside halfcourt bounced out at the buzzer. It couldnt get any closer, Parker said. But when it didnt fall, the French had a win worth celebrating. We had a rough start and now I feel like were back to our identity and were playing a lot better, Parker said. DETROIT -- Joe Mauer provided the early power, and P.J. Walters gave Minnesota the start it needed on that mound. Now the Twins can finally move on after an ugly 10-game losing streak. Mauer homered and had three hits, and the Twins snapped their skid with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Walters was solid in his first major league appearance of the season. He was called up from the minors before the game. "It feels good to get out from under that 10-gamer," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, who was ejected in the third inning. "We got out to a quick start, and then we had to hold on for a long time against a really good team. Thats not an easy lineup to shut down, but P.J. did a great job. He got us deep enough and then our bullpen finished it off." Mauer had already earned the ire of Detroit fans when he broke up Anibal Sanchezs no-hit bid in the ninth inning Friday night. He was booed when came to bat in the first inning Saturday -- then booed some more after his solo homer to right field. The Twins scored three runs in the first, and that was enough. Walters (1-0) went six innings, allowing two runs and eight hits. Mauer had two singles to go along with his homer. "Mauer is Mauer," Detroit catcher Brayan Pena said. "Sometimes you make great pitches to him, and he still can hit you." Four relievers finished for the Twins, with Glen Perkins pitching the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances. Detroits Doug Fister (5-2) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Jhonny Peralta homered for the Tigers. Gardenhire was ejected while arguing a call in the third inning. Mauers first-inning drive was ruled a homer, then reviewed because the ball bounced back into the field of play. A replay showed it hit the top of the wall in right, but may have also glanced off a railing above the wall. The call stood. The Twins werent done. After being shut down in Sanchezs one-hitter the previous evening, they broke through right away against Fister. Justin Morneaus RBI double made it 2-0, and he came in to score on Chris Parmelees single. Walters got out of a jam in the second when Andy Dirks struck out with the bases loaded. The following inning, Gardenhire was ejected. Thhe Twins had men on first and second with nobody out when Morneau hit a grounder to first baseman Prince Fielder.dddddddddddd He threw to second, and the Tigers turned a double play -- but Mauer, who had advanced to third on the play, was sent back to second because of an interference call. Josh Willingham had gone sliding into Peralta, the shortstop. Gardenhire came out to argue and was thrown out of the game by second base umpire Joe West. "His call was that he slid too close to the bag or something. He told me that he was protecting the defender, just like he had always protected me when I was playing," Gardenhire said. "I said Joe, I didnt play that much." Detroits Miguel Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a first-inning single, but that was his only hit. Torii Hunter got the Tigers on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, but Cabrera struck out to end that inning. Peralta made it a one-run game in the sixth with his fifth homer of the year. "It was just location. I was able to keep the ball down on almost every pitch, and thats huge against that lineup," said Walters, who was making his first major league appearance of the season. "I got one pitch up to Torii, and I got another one up on the homer, but those were the only big mistakes." Twins centre fielder Wilkin Ramirez left the game after a scary collision on a fly ball. Omar Infante lifted a fly to left-centre in the sixth, and left fielder Willingham was under it when Ramirez came speeding over to try to make the play. Ramirez did catch the ball, holding onto it for the third out after colliding with Willingham. Ramirez remained down on the ground well into the break between innings. He was finally able to walk off under his own power, but when he got back to the dugout, he appeared to be flexing his jaw.
